Environmental Health, Safety and Emergency Management

All labs at Appalachian State University must have a comprehensive set of documents that are judged to adequately cover all hazards present in the laboratory. This judgement is reserved for the Industrial Hygiene Manager (EHS & EM), the Environmental Affairs Manager (EHS & EM), and the department chair of the lab in question. Some of these documents are broad policies that apply to the entire university while others must be customized to fit the hazards present. EHS & EM provides many Standard Operating Procedure documents (SOP's) for different hazard classes, information flyers, and templates to help labs meet these requirements. Chemical SOP's

At the base level of all chemical work, lab workers should be handling any substance in the lab using prudent practices as detailed in the free resource Prudent Practices in the Laboratory. However, some chemicals have hazards that require more careful thought and planning in the form of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). The chemical hazard category table provides guidance on what class of Standard Operating Procedure is required based on a chemical’s classification within the Globally Harmonized System.
