Jason Marshburn, MS


Jason came to Appalachian State University from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) in March of 2014 to serve as the Director of Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management.  He began working at UNCG in May of 2007 as the Safety Coordinator in the Environmental Health and Safety Office. Following his tenure as Safety Coordinator, he joined the Office of Emergency Management upon its inception in January of 2009 where he served as director until he came to Appalachian State University.   Jason holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Emergency Management from Western Carolina University, as well as a Master of Science Degree in Safety, Security, and Emergency Management from Eastern Kentucky University. Gregory Bell, CHMM 

Environmental Affairs Manager

Greg came to Appalachian State University in July of 2015 to serve as the Manager of Environmental Affairs. He has over 20 years’ experience in a university setting, working as the Chemical and Laboratory Safety Manager at the University of Georgia and as an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist at Florida State University. Greg works primarily on hazardous waste, hazmat recycling, and laboratory safety issues and also has a background in hazmat training and emergency response. Greg holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Soil Science from the University of Georgia and is accredited as a Master Level Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) since 2005, Senior Level CHMM since 1999. Mary M. Cavanaugh, CIH

Occupational Health Manager & University Industrial Hygienist

Mary is the University Industrial Hygienist and Occupational Health Manager. She is responsible for programs related to chemical and biological safety at Appalachian.  She serves as the University's Chemical Hygiene Officer, Hazard Communication Program Manager, Bloodborne Exposure Control Officer, Respiratory Protection Program Manager, and EHS&EM's representative on the Institutional Biosafety Committee and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.  Mary began working at Appalachian in 1999, after 15 years in the private sector environmental engineering industry, including 10 years at Halliburton. Beth S. Clark

Fire and Life Safety Manager

Beth serves as the University Fire and Life Safety Manager. She is responsible for ensuring monitoring compliance with N.C. Fire Prevention, N.C. Building and NC OSHA Standards. Beth also manages campus fire and life safety inspections, fire drills, emergency evacuation plans and fire safety training programs. Beth began her career at Appalachian in 1991 with University Police and later joined the Office of Environmental Health, Safety and Emergency Management in 1993. Beth has an Associate in Applied Science in Criminal Justice - Protective Service Technology. She is certified as a North Carolina Firefighter II and served in the N.C. Fire Service for 23 years. Steven J. Nixon, OHST

Occupational Safety Manager

Steve came to Appalachian State University as Occupational Safety Manager in March of 2017. Steve graduated from Appalachian State in 2003 with a B.S in Criminal Justice, and is excited to be in a role in which he can support the university community. Steve is certified as an Occupational Health and Safety Technologist through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. He is responsible for developing and implementing workplace safety programs in a manner which support continued growth of the university safety culture. Debi Trivette, NC-CEM

Emergency Planner

Debi is a North Carolina Certified Emergency Manager and is excited to hold the position of Emergency Planner for Appalachian State. As Emergency Planner, responsibilities include managing the Building Emergency Team Program for the University, Emergency Exercise planning, assisting with Emergency Operations Plans and Incident Action Plans. Debi is staffed in the Emergency Operations Center, staffed in the Command Post for special events, serves as a member of the Emergency Management Task Force, and provides emergency management support, including training. Debi began working at Appalachian in 2010. She has two Associate in Applied Science degrees; one in Medical Office Administration and the other in Office Systems Technologies.
